The Spelling Progress Digest

Dear Literacy Friend,
Anglophone communities love literacy and fight illiteracy--yet are marked by a perennial 20% illiteracy rate. Tho it's a no-brainer that funky English spelling is at the root of funky English illiteracy, most folks say, "oh well, what can I do?" Well, the internet is keeping us abreast of (and driving to some extent) mainstream published spelling progress, i.e. simple spellings such as 'u' (you) are sprouting and growing in mainstream texts thruout the world--spellings u and i can use regularly. Spellings in the list below are cases in point, i.e. clear, current, lowercase, non-italicized, non-quote spellings moving into the mainstream. Note: some items--like catalog, dialog, donut, thruway, drive-thru--have moved into the mainstream so well they're equal to or greater than the frequency of their sister spelling (aka catalogue, dialogue, doughnut, throughway & drive-through); i.e. catalog, dialog, donut, thruway & drivethru have surpassed (or are surpassing) catalogue, dialogue, doughnut, throughway, drive-through. The latter group will continue to wane; in this world of brevity, any other scenario is improbable to say the least.
